Growing up is as normal and easy as breathing – well, under normal circumstances. We do not have to work hard or struggle to grow. It just happens whether we like it or not.
Maybe that is the reason we dislike growing up so much. When we are young, growth seems exciting as it means a step closer to our freedom. Freedom to do whatever we want, achieve our dreams. With no rules, restrictions, parents to obey. But then, once we get there, we realise despite being “free”, life doesn´t let us do whatever our mind is wild enough to dare to dream. We realise that with age, comes a given percentage of responsibility and challenges. And then we start thinking, “maybe it was not that interesting to grow up.” Or was it? Maybe it is not the growing we dislike so much but the aging. Or is it the realisation of how time goes by so fast and how the dreams we had as children only remained dreams and yet we still live in the ever diminishing hope of fulfilling these dreams. Or is it the consistent challenge to match our success with our age. Is it the pressure to have accomplished certain things at a given age? Whatever reason it is, it seems to blind us to the gift of life we have. And then, instead of enjoying it, we begin to dread it.
But hey, much as the above are the realities of life, there is another side of growing up. We get to learn both from our experience and mistakes, we get to see generations and time and development, we get to spend time with those we love and make memories we cherish, we get another chance to return to our father and invest in our banks of eternity, we get a chance to make the world a better place and touch and inspire the lives of those around us. So let us embrace every year and chance we get to take another fresh breath of oxygen. For it means there is still hope. We have yet another chance to correct the mistakes we made, and to fulfil the dreams we have. Not many get the chance to live as long as we have, so let us embrace growing up with all that we are. For it is one of the greatest gifts we have from God, LIFE.
